Portugal Tour
Autumn run to the sun!
Our tour begins in Santander in northern Spain. We begin by heading along the coast passing pretty fishing villages before turning south and heading over the mighty Picos de Europa mountain range. Crossing into Portugal the change in terrain and lifestyle is noticeable. Villages are smaller, farms are more rustic and there are tracks everywhere with many streams and small rivers to be crossed.
Compared to its Iberian neighbour life here moves at a gentler pace. There is a countrywide network of ancient tracks and trails stretching from the mountains and ski resorts in the north east to the deserted beaches of the south west, making the whole country an overlander's paradise.
Initially, our route follows the border with Spain over high, remote moorland before descending into lush valleys. As we head further south we skirt the banks of and then cross the mighty Douro, Tejo and Guadiana rivers and then swing south-west inland. Along the way we pass hilltop towns with their fortified ramparts standing guard against long-gone invaders.
Our route continues south west to the Atlantic coast and our final destination is a two-night stay in the pretty coastal resort of Sagres with its dramatic cliffs, eucalyptus plantations and beautiful beaches. Our campsites are all hand-picked and with modern facilities; in the main, family-run and a warm welcome is assured.
